THE EXPERIENCE

The Franschhoek Wine Tram is the easiest, most iconic way to explore the Franschhoek Valley without needing to plan driving, routes, or logistics. It is a hop on hop off experience that runs on multiple set lines, each stopping at a curated selection of wine estates. You choose a line that suits your mood and then move through the valley by vintage style tram and tram bus, stopping for tastings, lunch, cellar experiences, and scenic estate time at your own pace.

Your day starts at either the Franschhoek Terminal or the Groot Drakenstein Terminal depending on the line you book. From there you follow the line schedule and decide where to hop off, how long to stay, and when to hop back on. It is flexible, but it is still timetable based, so the key to a smooth day is choosing your stops with the schedule in mind.

WHATS INCLUDED

• Access to your selected Wine Tram line for the day.
• Scheduled hop on hop off transport between participating estates.
• Timetable guidance to help plan your movement between stops.
• Access to a curated list of estates on your chosen route.

Please note that wine tastings, food, and estate specific experiences are paid directly at each venue and are not included in the ticket price.

WHY WE RECOMMEND

• A relaxed hop on hop off format so you can tailor the day to your taste and pace

• Multiple lines and estates to choose from, so you can match the route to the style of day you want

• A mix of vintage tram and tram bus transport through the valley, with scenic stops and easy movement between estates

• Perfect for couples, groups, and first time Winelands visitors who want structure without feeling rushed

HOW TO PREPARE

• Wear comfortable but polished attire. Many estates are beautifully designed and guests often dress slightly elevated for the experience.

• Bring sunglasses and sunscreen, as several estates feature outdoor tasting terraces and vineyard views.

• Carry a small tote or day bag if you plan to purchase bottles.

• Keep a light layer available, as mornings and late afternoons in the valley can feel cooler than midday.

• Stay hydrated throughout the day and enjoy tastings at a measured pace.

INSIDER NOTES

The most enjoyable days are those that are lightly planned in advance. While the system is flexible, it runs on a timetable. Choosing two or three estates you truly want to experience often results in a more refined and relaxed day than trying to rush through too many stops.

Restaurant bookings at popular estates should be secured ahead of time, especially during peak season. Franschhoek is one of the most sought after culinary regions in the country.

For a more elevated experience, consider pairing the tram with a private transfer from Cape Town so the entire day feels seamless from start to finish.

If you initially find the different lines a little confusing, then I highly recommend booking one of the tours. We did the Exceptional Wine & Cuisine tour. The experience was incredible. Our guide and the wineries that were chosen were all perfect. The food was delicious from breakfast to evening dessert. Our guide, Courtney was incredibly accommodating. She ensured our experience was nothing less than spectacular. Valentino and Taylor helped us at the station and were fantastic hosts while we waited for our tram to arrive. The whole team was great.

I will suggest to have a vip tour (Private tour) Yes - experience is higher in price, but definitely worth it! Best experience so far in SA! Yes only three wineries - but you are not in a rush You eat delicious food - paired 100% nicely You have time to enjoy atmosphere! Will be back 100% !!!! Note 📝 in advance for allergies, the staff was very helpful to accommodate gluten free intolerance on spot, but be careful to note it in advance. Visited in June 2025 - so not so many people! Enjoyed our time very much !

A great way to travel between wineries. The wine tram and wine buses run like clockwork and are easy to use. We took the pink line and visited 5 wineries with lunch at Leopard’s Leap. (Would def recommend the Rottiserie option) The staff on the bus and tram were extremely friendly and helpful.

This experience was absolutely amazing! From the collection point, transfers between wineries and the drop off, so well organised and was overall perfect! We made it to 4 wineries; could have done 5 but wanted to enjoy each winery more. Lovely staff. Beautiful views and gorgeous wineries. Jona, who was the tram guide made the experience wonderful. Highly recommend!

We took the blue line... You must be a wine lover to fully enjoy and immerse yourself in this experience... Otherwise, service was great, the guides were truly helpful and everything is timed to the T... The views are incredible... Thank you for having us!

It was a really nice experience. We took the blue line, which is relatively central in the town. We visited 4 wineries, all a bit different, and we spent 1 hour at each. It was perfectly enough for a day, but we would spend 2 hour in the one where we take our lunch. In 1 hour, lunch and wine tasting felt a bit rushed. Our guides were nice and friendly especially Asa, with whom we had a nice chat on our last shuttle.

Highly recommend. A cute idea for a day while you’re in Franschoek. They hold onto your wine as you buy and even have deals for some of the wineries. We did the red line, tram first. Rickety bridge, grande Provence and haute cabriere (the best) were well worth a visit. Make reservations directly with the wineries where you can to ensure a smoother day / avoid disappointment. FYI - On the tram, they will ask you to sit at the bottom on the way in and then on the top on the way back. Some people had an issue with that but it really doesn’t matter.

Had a good experience. We did the Navy line which went to some lovely wine farms. Farms visited: Vrede & Lust, Le Pomier, Boschendal I would definitely recommend you pre-decide what farms you want to do and know the times that you want to go to them cause that took most of our time. Very confusing for first timers 🥹. You can park your car there while you go on the tram/bus. Note that the gates close at 17:30 sharp for you to collect your car. If there is a farm you really want to visit, rather take your car then you can spend more time there.
